Iland Life is an arts project using digital technology to record the thoughts, memories and stories of ‘islanders’ living in the Five Ways area of Birmingham, UK. Friction Arts have teamed up with Bev Harvey and Vince Nelson to work with young people on the estate to record, edit and share the island stories of people living within the concrete collar of the ring road and the ‘leisure zone’ around Broad Street.
The project contains a number of strands:
- audio workshops with young people at 641 Youth House. These workshops train the young people in using digital audio recording and editing technology to record oral histories from a range of people from their community
- performance and installation workshops with young people from the Curio City Shop
- visits with young people to central library archiving
- an exhibition where the resulting material is installed onto a fishing boat, brought from Northern Scotland
- a series of performances by young people in and around the installation
Iland Life is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund
